The Style Edit: October 2020

As summer dwindles to a soft glow on the horizon, my favorite season approaches, bringing with it the glorious colors of a New York autumn. Time to settle in and embrace the cooler air, infusing our homes with warm, rustic hues and the scent of fall spices. With seasons shifting and sweater weather upon us, I’d like to share a list of my latest inspirations and unique seasonal finds:

Hawaiian artist, Christy Lee Rogers.

Experimental underwater artist, Christy Lee Rogers, breaks the convention of photography with dark, mysterious pieces that can easily be mistaken for a painting. I’m captivated by the baroque, yet contemporary approach to her underwater photography. Of my favorite collection, her Odyssey series reminds me of a vividly colored renaissance dream. Her use of color is so beautifully saturated with a sense of weightlessness, mystery and romance.

I discovered her work in New Orleans about eight or so years ago at the Graphite Gallery where she had a solo show during PhotoNola. There I purchased a piece from her Odyssey collection which now hangs in my office. I also recently came across her video works, which I find to be soothing and absolutely fascinating.

Although I consider myself a classicist, I appreciate interiors of all aesthetics. Everyone has a unique perspective and I enjoy being an insightful voyeur. One of the most inspirational interior design oriented accounts is that of  @jroman1964  His posts have an underlying masucline distinct point of view, which I see as strong and modern, yet classic. Through his account I  regularly discover new designers, furnishings and art.

What I’m Reading

When I travel I want to mingle with locals and steer clear of tourist driven locales.  Along Dusty Road is a well crafted travel guide with thoughtful narratives, insightful photographs and practical advice on non-conventional travel. I discovered this blog at the start of my hybernation during the Covid pandemic and have been following it ever since. Not only is their photography transcending, but their writing comes across as an incredibly well crafted novel.  I love reading into the intimate details and insights of Emily and Andrew’s travels, feeling quite connected to them as well as their  personal journey.

Trade Secret

The Live Auctioneers App gives you insight into many small and unknown auction galleries where you can find hidden treasures.  I’ve found that most clients are unsure of how to partake in auctions.  This app gets you in the game and allows you to familiarize yourself with auctions,

I have a thing for scarabs and all the mysteries of Egypt.  I was able to find an incredible overscaled, carved and gilded scarab box that I just had to have. I don't think that there is a big market for scarabs, so I was able to buy it for only $225.00.

I often use this app to source unique pieces for clients and set up alerts for items that I’m always on the hunt for.  Lately I’ve got a crush on gray wedgwood jasperware.  It was made in very small quantities and is difficult to find.  I also love vintage Steuben glassware, amethyst transferware, and interesting porcelain pieces I can turn into one-of-a-kind lamps. I’m very open to new discoveries.

I’ve yet to auction any of my own pieces.  However, we are assembling a lifetime of goods and collections that I’ve amassed which will be part of an upcoming  sale for Sothebys Home, slated to launch in mid-october.  Stay tuned!

Must Have

La Tuile à Loup: a Parisian ceramics shop and pottery boutique in the heart of 5th arrondissement offers a host of artisanal goods from the finest French craftsmanship. Each piece of theirs is unique, displaying a depth of coloration they are able to achieve with their elaborate marbleized finishes.

When you see these pieces you can immediately tell that they are artisan made. I discovered the shop through my friend Beth Dempsey, whose PR firm Images & Details represents them.  I have met the owner Eric Goju several times during Maison Objet and purchased two large platters in tones of brown, green and yellow.  I also own a beautiful tureen with a rabbit motif.

Balantyre Resort, Lenox MA

Balantyre Resort, Lenox MA

Hot Spot

Fall Getaway: The Berkshires is beautiful any time of the year but especially beautiful during the fall season, my favorite season of all. This year, I’m looking forward to visiting Balantyre Resort, located in the heart of Lenox MA. Not only is the scenery gorgeous, but the interiors have an updated traditional vibe which feels very appropriate for Massachusetts.

There are plenty of activities to enjoy, seasonal or otherwise. I highly recommend Tanglewood for an incredible classical concert.  They often have shows where the Boston Symphony orchestra will play classic movie soundtracks as well as contemporary musicians like John Legend. The Mount, which was Edith Wharton's home, is also a fascinating place to visit, along with Frelinghuysen Morris House & Studio, home of one of the original American promoters of Abstract Art. I also love the old school vibe of the Red Lion Inn Dining Room— don’t leave there without trying one of their famous popovers!  And if you’re just looking to relax in the resort, Balantyre’s indoor spa is a heavenly oasis at the top of my list for the next visit.
